Shipley Project November 2010 - back in the studio

Progress by the group on their Shipley Project. Now we are back at the Lyndhurst Centre working from our notes, sketches and studies, and digital images of the originals for the next two weeks. 12 November Shipley Project visit

For the next two weeks we are studying at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. We are working directly from paintings in the collection.  Everyone has produced well thought-out studies and notes to create a foundation of understanding about the painting they are using for their Shipley project. Here we are at work, in the previous post you can see our work so far.

12 November Shipley Project studies

For the next two weeks we are studying at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. We are working directly from paintings in the collection. This week we followed  a process of preparatory study using line and tone thumbnail sketches. Next week we start painting. 5 November

Harry's nearly completed detail project painting.
Colours and textures are getting much more interesting.
Bob's Armistice Day project painting at the ground and
underpainting stage.  This one looks like it could change a
lot during the making.
Peter's completed detail painting. Very effective mood and
lighting effects. Great palette.

Len's finished detail painting. Lovely tonal range in the colours.
Very strong design elements.

Terry's nearly completed flower picture showing very good
tonal awareness in this very challenging subject.

29 October 2010

Terry's finished Lindisfarne acrylic. Good adjustments made
to sky and water to create a cool open feel.
Terry's new picture, a challenge to achieve whites and greens
of subtle variation. Good start.
Ruth's new picture, painting the ground colours. Good to
see the bold simplicity at this stage.
Harry's detail picture project. Great drawing and design features.
Foreground work suggests the colours will become more interesting.
Bob's detail project painting with wonderful scumble
technique and colour relationships.

Peter's detail project painting is developing nicely.
Good strong moody palette.

Michaels' detail project painting shows good scumble technique
to create mist and light.
Len's new painting showing the early ground stage. Good to
see bold simple design at this key point in the picture making process.
Great start on the sky.
